We’re all smiles

Director, Office of Student Media

We’re all smiles.

Let’s start with the fact that we are one year removed from the tornado of April 27, 2011. A time of great sorrow, loss and upheaval for UA and the city, but a time of learning, growth and maturity for The Crimson White staff. Their coverage, which continued with a one-year retrospective special issue, was epic. All the accolades and awards they’ve earned are well deserved.

Including the outstanding work of four students that brought a first-ever honor to the newspaper. Taylor Holland, Hannah Mask, Jonathan Reed and Kelsey Stein won first place nationally in breaking news reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists in their annual Mark of Excellence competition. This is the first time the CW has won a national award in this SPJ competition.

Next, our students are being successful in this still-struggling job market once theygraduate. All of the graduating CW ad reps and editors had a job before they left campus recently.

Last, our new building. It doubles our space. It triples Internet connections. It provides us with a training/meeting space that seats up to 36 people. It will allow us to move the radio station into the same building. It provides easy parking andaccess. It allows us to rethink and remodel our newsgathering and news production flow.
It is exactly what we need to move forward.

But it’s not on the site of our current building. We realize there are some strong emotional ties to this old house. That brings to mind a Dr. Seuss quote: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”

“Life is short, Break the Rules.
Forgive quickly, Kiss SLOWLY.
Love truly. Laugh uncontrollably
And never regret ANYTHING
That makes you smile.”
